ANALYSIS OF  GUY BOURDIN'S FONTAINEBLEAU EDITORIAL

Appearing in the May 1978 issue of Vogue Paris, this image by Guy Bourdin makes up part of a conceptual editorial shot at the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami. The prestigious hotel is a historical landmark, known for its “Miami Modern” style architecture that embodies the glamorous resort lifestyle of the South Florida city (Esperdy 497). Parallel with this setting, Bourdin captures a fashion editorial that is playful, fresh and bold.

In this image, three women are seen sprawled across a room in the hotel. Significant to Bourdin’s style of photography, the image suggests a narrative behind these women, who all take form in different positions with varying facial expressions and styles of dress. This quality of mystery is embedded throughout the entirety of the editorial; another image shot at the Fontainebleau depicts two scantily-clad models fleeing from policemen in the halls of the hotel (Fig. 1). While these may not be the same women and there may be no correlation between the stories behind the images, there exists a sense of enigmatic sensuality in the editorial.
