CRAZY RICH ASIANS: ASIAN REPRESENTATION IN FILM

Jon M. Chu’s newly-released romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians has made a place for itself as one of the most highly anticipated films of the year but moreover, has marked a historical moment for Asians in American cinema. Crazy Rich Asians presents an alternative representation of Asian identity in Hollywood, transcending stereotypes, and opposing the hierarchy of the film industry that privileges whiteness.

The film forces us to consider the importance of authentic representation of a marginalized group in media rather than tokenistic diversity. Real representation has the power to change opinions and disrupt systems that discriminate certain people, while attempts at diversity may only encourage existing ideologies surrounding certain ethnicities, and the exclusion that occurs as a result.
